Mixed-race writers invited to share and contribute to the groundbreaking celebration of Mixed identity

Earlier this year, Militantly Mixed and Mixed Auntie Confidential announced an exciting new anthology celebrating a fresh dimension of Mixed-race identity journeys for writers at all experience levels.  We received a number of wonderful submissions that we cannot wait to share with you. However, we have found out we have room to print more pages soooooooooooo, we decided to re-open the submissions for this first volume. As of June 1, 2023, you may now submit your previously unpublished non-fiction essay or poem for consideration for the Be Your Mixed Ass Self ® Anthology.

The premiere issue of the Be Your Mixed Ass Self ® Anthology Volume 1 welcomes original, unpublished essays and poetry by Mixed-race adults of all genders, and mixes.

“Be Your Mixed Ass Self®” is the motto of the Militantly Mixed podcast, created and hosted by Sharmane “Sir Auntie Mane” Fury.  “This anthology takes that affirmation to the next level to uplift public unapologetic mixedness in ways that empower us all.” 

This groundbreaking anthology will be a fundraiser for the award-winning Militantly Mixed podcast which is celebrating its fifth anniversary in 2023. The anthology submission deadline is JUNE 30TH, 2023. 

“We’re looking for writing that shares the experience of becoming your Mixed ass self,” says TaRessa Stovall, author and blogger at Mixed Auntie Confidential, who is co-editing the anthology with Sharmane. “Contributors don’t have to be professional or published writers. We welcome new and experienced writers to add their voices to the mix.” 

“It’s the authenticity of the writing for us,” said Sharmane.

Submission Requirements

• You may submit 1 – 3 pieces of original, unpublished nonfiction writing

• You must be the original author of everything you submit

• Each piece must describe or represent your journey to discovering / connecting with / expressing your Mixed ass Self including challenges you have faced and overcome in your Mixed identity journey

• We do not accept pieces that have already been published online or in print (This does not include writing that has appeared on personal or private social media profiles or forums)

• Submission fees: $15 for each poem and for each essay/poem*

• Submissions will be logged as received once payment is made to ManeHustle Media via Paypal button at the bottom of the screen.

• All submissions must be in English – words and phrases in other languages can be included with translation / context for readers to understand

• Essays must be nonfiction

• Poetry submissions: 1500 words or less per poem

• Separate poems by titles or page breaks

• Essay submissions: 2000 words or less per essay

• All submissions should be typed and double-spaced in Word in 12-point font with 1” margins

• No photos are artwork in submission.

• All submissions must be emailed by midnight June 30, 2023, to sharmane@militantlymixed.com 

• Please include a cover sheet with:

·       Your name (as you would like it to appear)

·       The title(s) of your submission(s)

·       Your email address and phone number(s)

·       A 50 – 60-word bio, written in the third person that includes a description of your mix and your preferred pronouns.

*If submission fees pose a barrier to entry, please email sharmane@militantlymixed to let us know. Limited financial assistance can be made available.

Each selected contributor will receive one print copy of the anthology and be spotlighted in promotions. Contributor bios will include whatever contact information they choose to share such as websites, social media handles and other relevant information.  

Rights: We have exclusive first rights – print and electronic – for 6 months from the publication date, followed by non-exclusive rights to include works in the anthology in our archive indefinitely. 

Translation: we’ll be the first to publish the submission and after the 6-month period, the contributor can redistribute it as they wish, understanding that it will be part of the anthology forever.
